Columella vs. cartilage piercing

Usually, the needle should pierce the fleshy part at the front of your nose, known as the columella, or the sweet spot. Most people find that this type of piercing hurts somewhat, but the pain is bearable. Nonetheless, if you don’t have a sweet spot, but you still want the piercing, then the needle will have to go through your cartilage, and this can be truly painful.

Clamp or no clamp

Many piercers do not use a clamp, as this can be more painful than the piercing. Even in the absence of a clamp, the overall sanitary conditions of the piercing parlor are very important if you want to avoid infection and more unnecessary pain. So make sure you see a professional and experienced piercer who has a license for this kind of procedure.

Personal factors

The pain you will feel also depends on your own pain threshold, and on whether this is your first piercing or not. Either way, your nose will be sore for 3-5 days afterwards.

Some people barely feel the needle, others experience some pain when the ring goes through. Some describe the pain as similar to what you feel after being hit in the nose.

I put it off for so long because I dreading the pain I heard so much about. I can honestly say that out of 10 it was a 2. The entire thing is so fast that you barely have time to register any pain at all. The clamp was the worst and that was no more than a 4. I think the mental anguish and unnecessary worry you put yourself through before the piercing is far more “painful” than the piercing so stop worrying (like I did) and go out and get that sexy septum piercing. I love mine and would do it a hundred more times. Pulling a muscle, stubbing your toe on the end of the bed, waxing, and ear piercings hurt so much more than my septum piercing did.
